Reminiscing in the 1911 bush school
16 February 2025
Last Thursday, 16th February, we had a visit from a former Hall school pupil.
Alma Haycox lived in Hall with her family in the 1940s and 50s and attended Hall Public School. They lived in the old Morris Bootmaker's shop in Victoria Street, so it was just a hop, skip & a jump for her to reach the school.
In those days the old bush school had just one classroom and although a couple of years younger, Kingsley Southwell (one of our regular volunteers) was in the same class group, along with all the other village kids.
Kingsley of course had a bit further to travel, from the family farm at Brooklands on Wallaroo Road. His father Cedric, used to ride his pony to and from Hall School after the Brooklands School was closed. Kingsley, however either rode his bike or hitched a ride with the mail delivery truck.
Richard O'Sullivan was their teacher. He taught at the school for 20 years from 1937 to 1957.
