Catlin, Mr Charles E
Mr. C. F. Catlin, who has had charge of Williams Creek and Upper Gundaroo schools for six years, has severed his connection with the Department. Before leaving he was entertained by about sixty friends in the local hall on Saturday night. Mr. J. F. Heazlett occupied the chair, and spoke in glowing terms of their young friend. He was one of the most popular teachers who have resided in Gundaroo, and was respected by parents and children alike. Mr. Catlin was secretary of the School of Arts for six years, and has acted without payment of any kind for most of that time. He was also an enthusiastic secretary of the local Soldiers' Fund since its inception, and took a warm interest in sport of all kinds.
The following speakers all testified to Mr. Catlin's worth as a townsman and to his sterling qualities in private :--Messrs. L. R. Dyce, A. W. Thornton, E. Elliott, F. Elliott, H. A. Lake, A. Frost, R. A. Butt and W. and C. McEnroe. The chairman then presented the guest with a handsome and valuable gold watch and chain on behalf of the residents of the town and district, and his health was enthusiastically drunk with musical honors. Mr. Catlin modestly replied and thanked the people heartily for their generous gift. Other toasts were proposed and duly honored. A pleasant gathering broke up with hearty cheers for their good tempered and obliging guest, and all hands were unanimous in wishing that his future would be bright and pleasant. Songs, and recitations were rendered by Messrs. R. C. Heazlett, J. Cheeseman, A. W. Thornton, L. Dyce, and the chairman.
