Southwell, Alfred Dawson
Alfred Dawson Southwell was born on 30th September 1867, the eldest son of Samuel and Harriet Southwell (nee Bembrick), who took their young family to Samuel's selection on Cow Flat Creek, Spring Range, which they called 'Cow Hollow'.
Lyall Gillespie recounts:
"In his youthful days Alfred had the misfortune to be wounded in the legs, when a newly-wed, whom he and a party of six others were 'tin-kettling', fired at him. The assailant was subsequently charged with feloniously and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm. Alfred himself faced the court a few years later for severely caning a boy at Yeumburra school. [Ed. The boy was Ernest Davis; Alfred was cautioned for inflicting excessive punishment]
Alfred married Marion Walker at 'Ledgerton' on 20 December 1892. He had a long teaching career and after spending some years at country schools became a principal taking charge successively of the schools at Hoxton Park, Revesby and Helensburgh. He retired in 1929 calling his retirement home at Bexley 'Fairledge', derived from the names of his and his wife's old homes 'Fairview' and Ledgerton'.
After he retired Alfred became circuit steward of the Methodist Church at Bexley. He died on 14 October 1952 and was buried at Woronora Methodist Cemetery, Sutherland. His wife, Marion, died on 14 October 1958 and was interred at Woronora".
