Kiernan, Mr Patrick
Patrick J. Kiernan, was born in 1869. While teacher at Glenwood school from September 1889 - April 1894, he was very active in Hall and Ginninderra sporting organisations. At a meeting of the one Tree Hill Jockey club in 1890, when James Gillespie resigned as Secretary after 19 years, Kiernan accepted the position. He is also listed as score keeper for an important steel quoits game between locals Read and Warwick, held at the Cricketers Arms Hotel, with substantial bets laid and numerous spectators. ln the early 1890's P.J.Kiernan was captain of the Ginninderra Football team which consisted mainly of members of the Boyd, Coulton, Rochford and Rolfe families.
The range of his involvements with the local community can be gauged from references to them in the district's newspapers:
- At a meeting held to make arrangements for the 1890 annual races at the Cricketers Arms Mr PJ Kiernan was elected secretary to replace Mr Jas Gillespie who had tendered his resignation after 19 years in that position. [Wizard's Notes Post 6.3.1890]
- Commended on his handling of the Secretary's duties at One Tree Hill Annual Races. [Wizard's Notes Post 5.4.1890]
- Acted as scorer in a quoit match at the Cricketers Arms between G Read and F Warwick for £10 a ride.[ Wizard's Notes Post 1.5.1890]
- Letters dated 16.7.1891 and 28.9.1881 to PF Sheedy Inspector of Schools and 28.7.1891 to Accountant Dept of Public Inst. From PJ Keirnan teacher Glenwood Public School. The letter of 28.9.1881 requested leave to attend the Mounted Infantry Sports at Queanbeyan on 30th Sept 1891. Kiernan indicated that he was a member of the Mounted Corps. - Captained Ginninderra Football team in a match against Umberrra on Saturday last. [Wizard's Notes Post 5.8.1890]
- Tendered his resignation as Secretary to the One Tree Hill Annual Races at the meeting held to arrange the programme for 1891. [Wizard's Notes Post 10.3.1891]
- Scorer and also a handicapper at the Pigeon Shooting Sweepstakes at the Cricketers Arms Hotel on Saturday last. [Wizard's Notes Post 26.7.1892]
- Report of the teachers of the Queanbeyan district forming themselves into a Mutual Improvement Society. The Committee included Mr Kiernan (Glenwood). [Goulburn Evening Post 20.10.1892]
- Member of Ginninderra Cricket Team which played Queanbeyan at Queanbeyan on Wednesday. Scored 2. Match was stopped by rain. [Goulburn Evening Post 15.11.1892]
- Played in social cricket at Ginninderra on Good Friday when teams captained by T & G Gribble competed. [Wizard's Notes Post 6.4.1893]
- Present at and took a leading part in the organization of the Glenwood School picnic. [Wizard's Notes Post 20.4.1893]
- Played in a cricket match against Sutton at Ginninderra on Saturday last. [Wizard's Notes Post 4.5.1893]
- Captained Ginninderra football team in a match played against Queanbeyan at Queanbeyan on Queen's birthday. [Goulburn Evening Post 30.5.1893]
- Divided first in three sweeps and won another outright in the pigeon shooting at the Cricketers Arms Hotel on Saturday afternoon. [Wizard's Notes Post 1.5.1894]
- Mr P J Kiernan who for some time been the school teacher at Glenwood has been promoted to take charge of Naragurdah School about 30 miles from Moruya on the Tuross River. Mr Kiernan received a very hearty send off from his pupils on Friday. [Goulburn Evening Post 3.5.1894]
