Rediscovering Ginninderra:
Mavis Dawn Bolton
Born: 1930; Died: 2003; Married: William Lionel Moore
Mavis was born in Hall, the daughter of Arthur Glenville Bolton and his wife Sarah ('Rosie') Bolton and the granddaughter of Joseph Bolton and his wife Mary Ann Bolton. Joseph ran the Cricketers Arms Hotel at Hall from 1880 to 1890.
Mavis married another local William Lionel Moore. They had two children William Glenville ('Billy') born 28 September 1959, died 8 January 2006 and a daughter born 13 December 1966.
Mavis and Lionel were the last residents at 'Lowanna' on what was the earlier William Davis' Ginninderra/Palmerville Estate. When the land was taken over for use by the CSIRO in 1959 they moved, first to O'Connor then to Watson.
While they lived at Ginninderra Mavis worked at Swains stationers in Civic. Lionel told the tale of Mavis walking from their cottage out to the Barton Highway where she had a lift in to town each day. On the way out she took a rifle and hid it in the bushes then retrieved it on the way home and with a bit of luck shot a rabbit!
Mavis and Lionel were devoted to their two children. After she died in 2003 they had to go into care during the week, as they were both severely handicapped. After Lionel's death in 2018 their Hackett house was sold for $761,000 and the proceeds were donated to Camp Quality.
Mavis' siblings were Irene, Ashley and Lorna (Mrs B. Reid) and there are many local family connections.
